Silicone Fluids

Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) fluids are available in any viscosity from 5 - 1M centistoke. These silicone fluids can be used neat or as performance modifiers in many systems. The unique properties associated with silicone allows them to be used in many applications.

Applications

Release agents

Resistance to high and low temperatures, do not form residues on mould surfaces, one application often sufficient for many applications. Typically used for demoulding rubber and plastic parts.

Lubricants

Excellent slip characteristics as well as low surface friction and high water repellency finds uses typically in films, cutting tools, extrusions and sewing threads.

Damping media

Physical properties are practically unchanged at temperatures above 200°C. Typically used in speed regulators, fluid clutches (e.g., fans), instruments, shock-absorbers etc.

Hydraulic fluids

Excellent viscosity / temperature characteristics, high compressibility and stability under shear. Uses include shock absorbers, pumps, brake cylinders.

Water repellents

Low surface tension and high hydrophobicity. Can be used on glass, fabrics, laminates, ceramics.

Antifoams

Effective in even the smallest amounts, they can be used to prevent foaming in non aqueous systems such as mineral and vegetable oils.

Creams polishes

Gloss retaining and imparting a silky feel, they are found in car and furniture polishes, shoe creams and floor polishes.

Speciality Silicone Fluids

Cyclic polydimethyl siloxanes are volatile silicones which evaporate at different temperatures. These are widely used in Personal Care as they are clear and colourless, insoluble in water but soluble in alcohol.

Special Blends

PennWhite Ltd can blend silicone fluids of different viscosities from 10 cst to 300,000 cst to suit a customers own requirements. These special blends can then be used as supplied or incorporated into specialised products. Examples include Supersil 861 and 862 which are blends of high and low viscosity oils, designed to give the high gloss properties of heavy oils together with the manageability of a lower viscosity material.

Silicones for Personal Care

Silicone Fluids are non-toxic and do not cause skin irritation or allergic reaction. They are odourless, tasteless and non-reactive. Due to this inertness they are used in cosmetic formulations such as skin care creams, sun tan lotions, body lotions and hair care formulations. Silicone fluids offer excellent water repellency for skin care preparations and improve the penetration / spreading properties of the products. Silicone Fluids are used as hair care additives to enhance the gloss, softness, body and manageability of the hair.

(Current products include PW202, PW214, PW256)

Silicone Solutions

Silicone solutions are mixtures of silicone oils and modified silicone oils in solvent. These solutions are particularly useful in the building industry as masonry water repellents. Other applications of silicone solutions are as release solutions and lubricants in spray can form.

(Current products include Supersil No 1 and Supersil No 2, PC48HF).
